For more than 20 years I have been running claims and cases through a variety of courts and jurisdictions. I have engaged countless experts over those years. And I have challenged or discredited experts on the other side of cases.
I have seen experts do really well. I have seen experts performing badly. There have been some mediocre performances as well. Guess which ones I go back to and keep engaging? Yep, the experts who are reliable and responsive, who understand their function and who strive for excellence.
This is because expert witnesses can often make, or break, a case. If an expert lets me down, my client will ask me why I selected that expert ... "please explain!". You see, it is typically the lawyers who make the purchasing decisions when engaging experts, not the client. So, no lawyer wants to use an expert who is going to let them down.
Becoming a professional expert witness can be a great way to boost your profile, diversify your income and move your exposure away from potential professional indemnity claims. But it can also kill your career or your booming side hustle, if you don't do it well.
